The Ultimate Guide to the Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal

By [Himalayan karma treks] – Your Trusted Government-Registered Trekking Agency in Nepal

Imagine a trek that offers all the raw, untamed beauty of the Himalayas, but without the crowded trails of Everest or Annapurna. Welcome to the Manaslu Circuit Trek. This isn't just a walk in the mountains; it's a journey into a world of ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture, remote villages, and the sheer, awe-inspiring presence of the world's eighth-highest mountain, Mt. Manaslu (8,163m) .

For the adventurous traveler seeking a true off-the-beaten-path experience in 2026, the Manaslu Circuit is the superior choice. It's a demanding, high-altitude adventure that rewards you with an authentic slice of Nepal that few get to witness. [IHmalayan karma treks], a locally-based, government-registered agency, is here to guide you every step of the way.

Why the Manaslu Circuit is Special

The Manaslu Circuit is unique. It is a perfect blend of dramatic landscapes, challenging trekking, and profound cultural immersion. The journey's crown jewel is the crossing of the Larkya La Pass at a staggering 5,106 meters (16,752 feet) , offering panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan giants .

This region is a living tapestry of cultures. As you trek, you'll pass through villages where the influence of Hinduism blends seamlessly with Tibetan Buddhism. You'll see prayer flags fluttering in the wind, ancient monasteries clinging to hillsides, and stone walls carved with sacred mantras, known as mani walls .

The trail circles the colossal Mt. Manaslu, keeping you in its shadow for days, a constant reminder of the raw power of nature. In 2026, the region is seeing improved trail conditions and better environmental management, ensuring a more comfortable yet equally wild experience .

Mandatory Permits and Rules in 2026

Crucial: The Manaslu Circuit is a restricted area. You cannot trek independently. By law, you must book your trek through a government-registered agency and be accompanied by a licensed guide . This is for your safety and to help preserve the region's unique culture and environment.

For your 2026 trek, we will handle the complex permit process for you. The three permits you need are:

  • Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP): This is the primary permit for the restricted zone.

    • Peak Season (Sept-Nov): $100 USD per person for the first 7 days, and $15 USD for each additional day .

    • Off-Season (Dec-Aug): $75 USD for the first 7 days, and $10 USD for each additional day .

  • Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): Approximately NPR 3,000 (~$22 USD) per person .

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Approximately NPR 3,000 (~$22 USD) per person, required as the latter part of the trek descends into the Annapurna region .

Minimum Group Size: While the RAP technically requires a minimum of two people, registered agencies like ours manage this by pairing solo trekkers or listing the guide on the permit, so solo trekkers are welcome .

Best Time to Trek

For the best weather and visibility, plan your Manaslu Circuit trek for one of two distinct seasons:

  • Autumn (September - November): This is the absolute best time to trek. Expect clear skies, stable weather, moderate temperatures, and stunning mountain views. Days are warm, but nights can be cold .

  • Spring (March - May): This is the second-best season. The weather is warm, and the trails are adorned with blooming rhododendron forests. Visibility is generally good, but you might encounter occasional clouds .  .

The monsoon (June-August) and winter (December-February) are generally not recommended due to landslides, heavy snow, and extreme cold, making high passes dangerous .

Difficulty and Acclimatization

The Manaslu Circuit is considered a moderate to highly difficult trek . You must be physically fit and mentally prepared for long days of walking over challenging terrain. Don't let this deter you, though. With proper preparation and the right pacing, it's an achievable and immensely rewarding challenge.

The biggest challenge is altitude. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real risk. The key to a successful and safe trek is a well-planned itinerary that includes proper acclimatization. This is non-negotiable.

  • Acclimatization Day: A crucial rest day is built into our itinerary at Samagaun (3,530m) to allow your body to adjust to the altitude .

  • Daily Gain: Our slow-paced approach ensures you never gain more than 500-600 meters in sleeping altitude, significantly reducing the risk of AMS .

We recommend a 15-day itinerary for better acclimatization, which gives your body the time it needs to adapt safely .

Food and Accommodation

The Manaslu Circuit offers a classic teahouse trekking experience. You'll stay in family-run lodges and eat hearty local food.

  • Lower Altitudes (below Samagaun): Teahouses are relatively comfortable, offering basic twin-sharing rooms, hot showers (often for a fee), Wi-Fi, and a variety of meal options .

  • Higher Altitudes (Samagaun, Samdo, and beyond): Accommodations become much simpler. Expect basic rooms, shared bathrooms, and limited electricity. A power bank and a good sleeping bag are essential . Food options also become more limited, focusing on high-energy staples like Dal Bhat (rice and lentils) and noodles.

  • The Teahouse Experience: These lodges are more than just a place to sleep. They are the heart of the trail, offering warmth, a chance to connect with fellow trekkers and locals, and a taste of genuine Himalayan hospitality .
