Kanchenjunga Circuit

Trip Overview

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is one of Nepal's most challenging and remote Himalayan adventures, taking you around the world's third-highest peak, Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586m). This 20-day expedition traverses the restricted Kanchenjunga Conservation Area in eastern Nepal, offering an extraordinary journey through pristine forests, high-alpine meadows, glacial valleys, and traditional villages of Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, and Tibetan-heritage communities.

Unlike the more commercialized Everest and Annapurna regions, the Kanchenjunga Circuit offers a raw and immersive wilderness experience. The trek encircles the mighty Kanchenjunga massif, visiting both the North Base Camp (Pangpema at 5,143m) and South Base Camp (Oktang at 4,730m), crossing high passes such as Sele La (4,290m), Sinion La (4,450m), Mirgin La (4,645m), and Sinelapche La (4,830m).

The journey begins with a scenic flight to Bhadrapur, followed by a drive through the tea gardens of Ilam to Taplejung. From there, the trail follows the Ghunsa Khola through dense rhododendron forests, past cascading waterfalls and suspension bridges, before ascending into the alpine zone. The route passes through charming villages like Ghunsa, Khambachen, and Lhonak, each offering unique cultural experiences.

The Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is ideal for experienced trekkers seeking a physically demanding yet immensely rewarding Himalayan adventure filled with dramatic landscapes, high mountain passes, glacier crossings, and authentic cultural experiences.

Best Seasons to Travel

Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are the best seasons for the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, offering stable weather, clear mountain views, and safer high-pass crossing conditions. During spring, the rhododendron forests burst into vibrant colors, creating a spectacular landscape. Autumn offers crisp, clear skies with stunning views of the Himalayan range stretching towards Everest and Makalu.

Notes to Travelers

This trek is physically demanding and recommended for experienced trekkers with strong fitness levels and prior high-altitude trekking experience. The circuit reaches altitudes over 5,100 meters and requires 20 days to complete.

The Kanchenjunga region is a restricted area, which means:

  • A licensed guide is mandatory

  • Solo trekking is not permitted

  • Special restricted area permits are required

Accommodation throughout the trek is in basic teahouses and community lodges with limited facilities. At higher altitudes like Lhonak and Pangpema, accommodations are very basic with stone huts. Temperatures drop well below freezing at night, so warm gear is crucial.

The trail involves crossing high passes, traversing landslide zones, and navigating glacial moraines. Trekkers should be comfortable with heights and prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather.

Transportation includes a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur (45 minutes), followed by jeep drives to Taplejung, Sekathum, Khebang, and Bhadrapur. Road conditions can be rough and delays may occur.

Permits required include the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP) and the Restricted Area Permit (RAP), arranged by Himalayan Karma Treks.
