Poon Hill Trek

Overview Departures Itinerary Inclusion Exclusion Gallery

Trip Overview

The Poon Hill Trek is one of Nepal's most popular and accessible short treks, offering an incredible Himalayan experience in just a few days. This classic Annapurna region trek takes you through lush rhododendron forests, traditional Gurung and Magar villages, and finally to the iconic Poon Hill viewpoint, where you are rewarded with one of the most spectacular sunrise panoramas in the world.

The trek begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, following the Modi Khola River through terraced farmlands and traditional villages. The trail ascends through dense rhododendron and oak forests, passing through charming settlements like Tikhedhunga and Ulleri before reaching Ghorepani village. From Ghorepani, an early morning hike leads to Poon Hill at 3,210 meters, where a spectacular sunrise illuminates the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, creating an unforgettable memory.

The Poon Hill Trek is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, making it an ideal choice for families, beginners, and experienced trekkers alike. It offers breathtaking mountain views, rich cultural experiences, and the chance to walk through some of the most beautiful rhododendron forests in the world.

Best Seasons to Travel

Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are the best seasons for the Poon Hill Trek, offering stable weather, clear mountain views, and comfortable temperatures. During spring, the rhododendron forests burst into vibrant red, pink, and white blooms, creating a spectacular landscape. Autumn offers crisp, clear skies and stunning mountain vistas.

Notes to Travelers

This trek is considered easy to moderate and is suitable for trekkers of all fitness levels. The trail reaches a maximum altitude of 3,210 meters at Poon Hill, making it accessible for beginners and families with children.

Accommodation throughout the trek is in comfortable teahouses with basic facilities. Rooms are typically twin-sharing with communal bathrooms. Hot showers and electricity are available for a small fee at most lodges.

The trek involves some steep stone staircases, particularly the climb from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri (approximately 3,000 steps). Trekking poles are highly recommended to ease the strain on your knees.

Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so packing layers is essential. Early morning starts for sunrise at Poon Hill require warm clothing as temperatures can be cold.

The Poon Hill Trek can be completed in 3-5 days, making it perfect for those with limited time who still want to experience the beauty of the Himalayas.
