Lhotse Expedition
Trip Overview
The Lhotse Expedition (8,516m), the fourth-highest mountain in the world, offers a technically demanding yet less crowded alternative to Everest. Sharing the classic Everest Base Camp approach, this expedition combines a well-established trekking route with a challenging high-altitude climb.
The journey begins in Kathmandu with preparations and logistics, followed by a scenic flight to Lukla. The trek progresses through the Khumbu Valley, passing iconic Sherpa settlements such as Namche Bazaar and Tengboche, allowing proper acclimatization before reaching Everest Base Camp.
From Base Camp, the climbing route follows the Khumbu Icefall, Western Cwm, and ascends the steep Lhotse Face before diverging toward the summit couloir. The expedition requires excellent physical fitness, prior high-altitude experience, and basic technical climbing skills.
Best Seasons to Travel:
The best time for the Lhotse Expedition is during spring (April to May), when weather conditions are comparatively stable and the summit windows are most favorable for climbing. Autumn (September to October) is also possible, although harsher weather, colder temperatures, and more unstable conditions make spring the preferred season for most climbers.
Notes to Travelers:
The Lhotse Expedition is suitable only for highly experienced mountaineers with prior 8,000-meter expedition experience and strong technical climbing abilities. Climbers should have excellent physical conditioning, glacier travel experience, fixed rope climbing skills, and the mental endurance necessary for extreme high-altitude mountaineering.
Accommodation during the trekking approach includes teahouses and lodges in the Everest region, while the expedition phase above Base Camp is fully supported with high-altitude camping. The route follows the Everest Base Camp trail before ascending through the Khumbu Icefall, Western Cwm, and Lhotse Face toward the summit route.
Lhotse is one of the world’s most iconic 8,000-meter mountains, offering climbers an intense and rewarding Himalayan challenge alongside breathtaking views of Everest, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and the surrounding Khumbu region. Reaching the summit of Lhotse is a remarkable achievement reserved for determined and highly capable mountaineers.
