The Himlung Himal Expedition (7,126m) is one of the most attractive climbing options for mountaineers looking to step into high-altitude expeditions in a controlled and less technical environment. Located in the remote Nar Phu region near the Tibetan border, Himlung offers a balanced combination of cultural trekking and a professionally managed climbing experience.

The journey begins in Kathmandu with preparation and expedition briefings before heading towards Besishahar and Koto. From here, the trail diverges from the popular Annapurna Circuit and enters the restricted Nar Phu Valley, a hidden gem known for its preserved Tibetan culture and dramatic landscapes.

The trekking phase passes through alpine forests, narrow gorges, and high-altitude settlements. Phu Gaon serves as an important acclimatization stop, allowing climbers to adjust to the increasing altitude while experiencing traditional Himalayan life.

From Phu Gaon, the route ascends to Himlung Base Camp where the expedition phase begins. The climb itself is considered moderately technical, involving snow slopes, glacier travel, and fixed rope sections. Its relatively straightforward nature compared to higher peaks makes it an excellent training ground for climbers aiming for future 8000m expeditions.

After the summit phase, the descent retraces the same route back through the Nar Phu Valley, followed by a drive back to Kathmandu.

Best Seasons to Travel

Spring (April to May) and Autumn (October to November) provide the most stable weather conditions for the Himlung Himal Expedition, with clear skies and favorable climbing windows.

Notes to Travelers

This expedition is suitable for climbers with previous trekking peak or basic mountaineering experience. While not highly technical, it still requires strong physical fitness and proper acclimatization.

Accommodation includes lodges during the trekking phase and fully supported camping at Base Camp and higher elevations.
As the region lies within a restricted area, special permits are required and managed by the expedition team.
Travel insurance, including high-altitude evacuation, is mandatory.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

You will be welcomed at the airport and transferred to your hotel. The day is free to rest and recover from your journey.
Day 2 : Rest, preparation, and briefing day.

This day includes expedition briefing, equipment checks, permit finalization, and last-minute preparations.
Day 3 : Drive to Besishahar.

A scenic drive through rural Nepal brings you to Besishahar, the gateway to the Annapurna region.
Day 4 : Drive to Koto.

The journey continues along mountain roads to Koto, where the trekking phase begins.
Day 5 : Trek from Koto to Mehta.

The trail enters the restricted Nar Phu Valley, passing through forests and river valleys with gradual altitude gain.
Day 6 : Trek from Mehta to Phu Gaon.

A long but rewarding trek leads to Phu Gaon, a traditional high-altitude village with strong Tibetan influence.
Day 7 : Rest and acclimatization day at Phu Gaon.

An important day for altitude adaptation with short hikes and exploration around the village.
Day 8 : Trek to Himlung Base Camp.

You ascend to Base Camp where full camping setup is established for the expedition phase.
Day 9-22 : Climbing period.

This phase includes acclimatization rotations, training, and summit attempt of Himlung Himal (7,126m). Climbers establish higher camps and prepare for a well-planned summit push.
Day 23 : Preparation, packing, and Base Camp cleanup.

Camps are dismantled, and preparations are made for the return journey while maintaining environmental standards.
Day 24 : Trek from Base Camp to Phu Gaon.

The descent begins, returning to familiar trails and lower altitude.
Day 25 : Trek from Phu Gaon to Mehta.

A steady descent through the valley with improving oxygen levels and easier terrain.
Day 26 : Trek from Mehta to Koto.

You exit the restricted region and return to Koto for overnight stay.
Day 27 : Drive from Koto to Kathmandu via Besishahar.

A long drive brings you back to Kathmandu where you check into your hotel.
Day 28 : Debriefing, leisure day, and farewell dinner.

A free day for rest and recovery followed by a farewell dinner in the evening.
Day 29 : Final departure.

Transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
