Trip Overview

The Manaslu Expedition (8,163m), the eighth-highest mountain in the world, is a remote and rewarding Himalayan climb that offers a true expedition experience. Known for its relatively less crowded route and rich cultural approach, Manaslu is an excellent choice for climbers seeking a serious 8000-meter objective with fewer commercial pressures.

The journey begins in Kathmandu with preparation and logistical arrangements. From there, a scenic drive takes you to Sotikhola via Arughat, marking the start of the trek. The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki River through lush forests, terraced fields, and traditional Gurung villages.

As the trek progresses, the landscape transitions into alpine terrain with increasing altitude. Villages such as Namrung and Sama Gaon provide key acclimatization stops before reaching Base Camp. A rest day at Sama Gaon ensures proper altitude adaptation.

From Manaslu Base Camp, the expedition phase begins with acclimatization rotations and the establishment of higher camps. The climb involves glacier travel, snow slopes, and fixed rope sections leading to the summit ridge. The summit push is carefully timed based on weather conditions.

After a successful summit, the descent follows the same route back to the trailhead, concluding with a drive back to Kathmandu.

Best Seasons to Travel

Spring (March to May) offers stable weather and favorable climbing conditions. Autumn (September to October) is also possible but generally colder with shorter weather windows.

Notes to Travelers

This expedition is suitable for climbers with prior high-altitude experience, ideally above 6,000 meters. Good physical fitness, basic technical climbing skills, and endurance are essential.

Accommodation during the trek is in lodges, while Base Camp and higher camps are fully supported with tents and expedition staff.

Altitude sickness is a serious concern, so proper acclimatization and awareness are crucial. Comprehensive travel and evacuation insurance is mandatory.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed at the airport and transferred to your hotel. The day is free to rest or explore the city.
Day 2 : Preparation, briefings, shopping, and permit formalities.

This day is dedicated to expedition briefings, equipment checks, last-minute shopping, and completing official procedures.
Day 3 : Drive from Kathmandu to Sotikhola (1,165m) via Arughat .

A long but scenic drive takes you through countryside landscapes to Sotikhola, the starting point of the trek.
Day 4 : Trek to Machhakhola .

The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki River, passing through forests and small settlements along a gradual path.
Day 5 : Trek to Jagat.

You continue along the river valley, crossing suspension bridges and entering the restricted Manaslu region.
Day 6 : Trek to Ngyak.

The trail ascends steadily through forested terrain and traditional villages as the altitude increases.
Day 7 : Trek to Namrung .

A steady climb brings you to Namrung, offering the first glimpses of higher Himalayan peaks.
Day 8 : Trek to Syalla Village .

The route enters alpine terrain with open landscapes and increasingly dramatic mountain views.
Day 9 : Trek to Sama Gaon.

A shorter trekking day leads to Sama Gaon, a key acclimatization village with stunning surroundings.
Day 10 : Rest and acclimatization day at Sama Gaon.

This day is essential for altitude adaptation, with optional hikes around the village and nearby viewpoints.
Day 11 : Trek to Manaslu Base Camp.

You ascend to Base Camp where the expedition phase begins, with full camping setup.
Day 12-37 : Climbing period.

This phase includes acclimatization rotations, training, and summit attempt of Mount Manaslu (8,163m). Climbers establish higher camps and prepare for a carefully timed summit push based on weather conditions.
Day 38 : Preparation for return and Base Camp cleanup.

Camps are dismantled and the area is cleaned in accordance with environmental guidelines before descent begins.
Day 39 : Trek back to Sama Gaon.

The descent begins, returning to lower altitude and lodge accommodation.
Day 40 : Trek to Namrung.

You continue descending through familiar trails, gradually regaining energy.
Day 41 : Trek to Philim Village.

The route passes through forests and villages, offering a more comfortable trekking environment.
Day 42 : Trek to Machhakhola.

Further descent along the river valley brings you to Machhakhola.
Day 43 : Trek to Sotikhola and drive to Arughat.

Final trekking section followed by a drive to Arughat.
Day 44 : Drive to Kathmandu.

A long drive returns you to Kathmandu, where you check into your hotel.
Day 45 : Debriefing, rest, contingency day, and farewell dinner.

A buffer day for any delays, followed by a celebration dinner in the evening.
Day 46 : Final departure.

Transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
